  The drive north through the inland village of Haria.  Lanzarote has a semi-desert climate but is known as the land of a thousand palms.  
     
  By tradition, a palm is planted for each child born here.  
     
         
     
      Mirador del Rio  
     
  A mountain top area with stunning views once used as a lookout for pirates and later an artillery base in the late 19th century.  
     
     
     
  Cesar Manrique created the setting in harmony with the environment.   Not far away lies the Aloe Vera farm where the plants thrive in the rich volcanic soil.  Aloe was used for medical purposes for thousands of years.  
     
  Mameos Del Agua, a series of underground grottos formed by volcanic activity some 3000 years ago.  
     
  A "jameo" is a cave created when a volcanic tunnel collapses.      
     
  Lots of steps and walking on uneven ground.   The views are quite unusual.
